Is it just me, or has this summer absolutely flown by? With August just around the corner and autumn creeping in, let’s talk summer trends (stay tuned for a talk on fall’s hottest commodities). Here’s the harsh reality: you have just a few weeks to cram in those summer 2k14 trends you’ve been dying to try. Personally, I love a good trend. Pairing the right trend with your own style can keep your looks current and fresh. Here are some of my fave trends of this summer and my tips for how you can rock them out loud.
all white to the black show
One of the sickest trends of the summer is all white outfits (and I’m not just talking about your average white sundress). This trend has been tearing it up from street style (Olivia P I’m looking at you) to the catwalk. Let’s be real, though, all white is scary, and you want to make sure you’re looking like a babe all day. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Keep it casual with a perfect crop top that hits right at your natural waist, some retro high waisted shorts, and a great flat bottom sandal. Pro-tip: Choose where you wear this look carefully. When I brave the all-white look, I wear it to my internship office or to class where I know I’ll be inside all day away from dirt, red sauce, and wine. [Cue stain remover commercial here.]
come on over, kimono-ver baby (all I want is you)
Kimonos. Yass. If there is one trend I’m loving this summer it’s this. I recently acquired a black kimono with a lace back and fringe around the bottom. I know it sounds like a lot but I am, as Kate so beautifully puts it, an Oxymoronic Flower Child type of gal and this trend compliments that vibe so nicely. Scared of looking like a grandma or cat lady? Fear not! You can rock this trend no matter what your personal style is because kimonos come in every print, and if they don’t the one you want, you can easily make your own!
Use your kimono as a statement piece or to tone down a loud print. This innovative take on the cardigan is so versatile that you can almost wear it with anything—from casual to chic—the choice is yours. I like to rock mine over a cool vintage dress or genie trousers, and some retro platform wedges.
i’m not your boyfriend baby
Masculine inspired silhouettes are everywhere this summer, and I love it! Mixing your feminine pieces with some nice boyfriend jeans, shorts, or overalls is a great way to add variety to a look and to make it more interesting. The big summer trend is shorteralls (short overalls). Dress up this casual staple by throwing some heeled sandals on or stay casual with some white Converse. I like the dressy look of the silver Birks (gotta love mixing and matching). Since overalls are a denim piece you can really make them your own. In the words of the man, Drake, “Own it.”
