Hey loves. Here to bring together little roundup of what I’ve been reading, listening to, and watching this week. It’s been a hectic one – always a million things to do and people to see, but a fun one nonetheless. Here’s the “best of the web” roundup for the week.
It’s a party here, ladies and gents. I’ve been getting really into understanding the science and chemistry behind my beauty products, lately, and mineral oil is something that has caused quite a mental controversy for me. This all started after I did a nice exfoliating treatment on my face and applied my favorite moisturizer. As it was soaking in, I started to notice my skin going drier and drier and as any ointment-loving gal does, I decided to apply a dime-sized bit of Aquaphor all over my face. If you haven’t heard, Aquaphor is one of my absolute favorite beauty products – it’s the only thing that ever really moisturizes my skin.
Anyway, I started doing some research and as it turns out, the main active ingredient in Aquaphor is petroleum, but the second is mineral oil. I vaugely remembered hearing some bad things about it a while back so I did some research. The conclusions I’ve found are these: mineral oil is not itself a moisturizer. What it does is act as a barrier on the skin so that moisture is locked in and can’t escape. I read a few blog posts written by doctors and dermatologists and they largely claim that all of the bad things you’ve heard about mineral oil (that it contains carcinogens and robs your skin of vitamins) are false! The only downside could be that it can be pore-clogging if you have acne prone skin, but I’ve never had a problem with that. It’s a holy grail moisture-locking ointment for me.
Dr. Pimple Popper
If you haven’t entered this wonderful part of YouTube yet, do it now. Dr. Sandra Leeis an dermatologist, skin-cancer surgeon, and cosmetic surgeon with the world’s most satisfying YouTube channel (over one million people have subscribed). This one pretty much does what it says on the tin. She posts incredibly satisfying videos of her extracting blackheads and whiteheads, and excising cysts. Think that’s absolutely revolting? Congrats, you’re probably normal. Me – I’ll just stay over here and watch one more. Or ten. The awesome thing is that I feel like I’ve honestly learned a lot about watching these videos. Did you know that cystic acne actually gets its name from the fact that the acne form small cyst sacs under the skin? Me neither! Love her.
The Great British Bake Off
Okay cool now that we’ve discussed pimples we’ll move on to baking (I didn’t really think the order of this post through, lol). This show is on Netflix right now under its name “The Great British Baking Show,” and it is the best show on Netflix if you’re a literal old British man (ME). It’s a reality competition featuring ten bakers from across the UK, and it’s the absolute most satisfying show you’ll ever watch. It features two lively judges, and two even livelier hosts/commentators, and I’m absolutely hooked.
