MOVIE REVIEW: SPRING BREAKERS

Like Beasts of the Southern Wild, I went into this movie knowing absolutely nothing about it.  This movie is an acid washed trip to the drugged up, gangster trap world of Florida on spring break. Four girls (Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine, and Vanessa Hudgens) leave their hometown starstruck with the image of an idyllic spring break and leave with a completely different attitude. That’s all I can really say without giving away the crazy plot of this art film directed by Harmony Korine. James Franco plays Alien, the drug kingpin of the beach scene, who is this absurd figure of power who at the same time channels this charming and caring persona while maintaining a weird sociopath ego. It’s weird. There’s nudity on nudity on nudity, and also just some crazy crazy shit. All I’m gonna say is there’s a montage of Franco playing Britney Spears’ “Everytime” on the piano while Hudgens, Benson, and Korine dance in a circle with machine guns and ski masks.

If that doesn’t give you an idea of what the feel of this film is, I don’t know what will. You all know I love weird movies like this so I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it, and never in my life have I ever hoped that Selena Gomez would have stayed on screen for longer. Also Gucci Mane plays James Franco’s ex best friend.

This movie is not for the faint of heart, but if you choose to venture into the weird world that is Spring Breakers, let me know what you think.
