MOVIE REVIEW: WILD

It’s been a while since I’ve done a post talking about a movie but I feel like this one is long overdue. As we already know, I love a good self-discovery movie. I especially love one that takes it’s characters into the wilderness to discover themselves (See: 127 Hours, Into The Wild, etc). I think maybe this comes from my own personal desire to do such but that’s off topic.

Reese Witherspoon as "Cheryl Strayed" in WILD.

I saw the trailer for Wild last fall and immediately I knew that I needed to see it. Cheryl Strayed’s memoir of the same name inspired the film, and she is portrayed in the film by the incredible Reese Witherspoon. The story chronicles Strayed’s life as a young 20-something whose mother, portrayed by Laura Dern, was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. From this point on, her life is never the same and she decides to embark on a journey through the PCT, a West Coast trail spanning from the Mojave Desert in Southern California to her final stop in Oregon.

The film is first of all, beautiful. The cinematography and filming style are absolutely gorgeous, but the real stars of the show are Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern. The two bring something incredible to the table, and they do a great job bringing Strayed’s life to the screen. Sorry this review is so short, but I highly recommend that you see this film. Best seen alone (in my opinion), Wild brings a light and beauty to a story littered with tragedy and hardship. It’s inspiring, funny, tragic, and beautiful all at once. Highly recommend.
