The Sun is Also A Star is the latest novel by NYT Bestselling Author Nicola Yoon. It is the first of her novels that I’ve read, and it’s one of the most exciting ones I’ve read recently. The story centers on two characters whose lives converge for one interesting day in New York City.
There’s a Japanese phrase that I like: koi no yokan. It doesn’t mean love at first sight. It’s closer to love at second sight. It’s the feeling when you meet someone that you know you’re going to fall in love with them. Maybe you don’t love them right away but it’s inevitable that you will.
The story is similar to Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor & Park in many ways. It is an unexpected and vibrant love story about unlikely lovers amid a bustling city. The story centers on Natasha, a young Jamaican American whose undocumented family is being deported. It deals with themes of love, friendship, and fate, and is one of the most sparkling contemporary romances I’ve read in years. The characters are three-dimensional and realistic portrayals of what it’s like to be at a turning point in life at a young age.
I highly recommend this novel, and am looking forward to reading Yoon’s debut, Everything Everything soon. Have you read this novel? I absolutely loved it.
